Set your operations context

Promises, volume and customer pressure

Someone promised more than capacity can support

Step into Operations on the floor: you lead the shift that must deliver what was promised.

Pick a handoff in the value chain, then choose whose shoes you step into. You are not on any side by default: play the same situation as Henrik in Operations or as Elena (Sales & Marketing) and notice what the other function sees that you do not.

The Broken Promise

120 promised · 80 feasible on the current plan

No binding date without material, capacity and quality sign-off

Elena · Sales & Marketing Manager

“The customer has planned around our launch date. If we change it now, we risk the account.”

Monday, 08:30 at Northline Motion’s assembly plant. You are discussing a launch commitment made to the customer. A delivery of 120 actuator assemblies was promised to VelaRail for 14:00 today. Only 80 can be assembled and inspected within the current shift. Making 120 would require moving certified stock and machine time from three other confirmed customer orders. Overtime, stock transfer and a later collection slot have not been approved.

You are Henrik, Operations Lead. You lead the assembly shift. You can pause work, contain a batch and escalate facts; you cannot approve a deviation, overtime budget or a binding customer delivery date.

Elena is responsible for customer retention and the quarterly volume target. Noor has the actual production evidence; Fatima sees the effect across the order book. Ask how each person prefers to raise concerns; do not infer it from their background.

Fictional training case. Northline Motion’s stated values: safety, honesty and shared responsibility.
